BY LEANING ON EACH OTHER WE BECOME STRONG

‘Even when you tear its petals off one after another, the rose keeps laughing and doesn't bend in pain. "Why should I be afflicted because of a thorn? It is the thorn which taught me how to laugh." Whatever you lost through fate, be certain that it saved you from pain.’ – Rumi

Many people, families and friends have been touched by cancer. We want to fight back by coming together, united in strength and let our voices be heard.

Steel Petals wishes to invite you to write a poem that will potentially feature in our book.

The book will be a compilation of selected poems submitted by you, presented on a kindle version or paperback book that can be purchased on Amazon or via our website.
All proceeds will go to Maggie's House and The Eve Appeal Charities.

CLAIRE L MONAGHAN

AUTHOR AND FOUNDER OF STEEL PETALS

C.L. Monaghan was born and raised in Lincolnshire in the UK, though she's lived in South Africa (a land of adventure and cheetah kisses!!) and has been known to pop across the pond to the US for book events.

A B.A. honours degree in History and English literature feeds her creative and ensnaring paranormal romance and gothic mystery novels, which have won several awards to date, including placing as finalists in their genres in the IAN Book of the Year Awards in 2017 and Readers' Favourite Awards in 2018 for excellence in writing.

An avid reader first, she was inspired by J.R.R. Tolkein, Enid Blyton, Stephen King, Terry Pratchett, and friend and mentor, indie author Ednah Walters (RIP), who encouraged C.L. to write what she wanted to read. And so, C.L. Monaghan's debut novel, Immaginario, brought her book boyfriend to life!

C.L. Monaghan, a self confessed Scotophile, now lives in Scotland with her husband and children whom she homeschools, 2 cats (it's customary for writers to own several cats) and Casper the miniature schnauzer.

To The Strongest Person They Know

She's not brave, she's choiceless.
She's no warrior, she's the lucky loser.
It's not her journey, it's her nightmare.
She doesn't want to inspire, she wants to live.
She tries to push through, but she's dying inside.
She's the strongest person they know.
She's a porcelain doll with a painted smile.
She's all of this.
She's a survivor.

A TRULY HEALING BLOOM

An interesting and symbolic fact about Sunflowers is that they grow graciously tall, soak up radiation and other harmful pollutants. They are a sign of healing, combined by the bumblebee who plays a key role in health, regeneration and growth when working together as a colony. The steel element symbolises strength and solidarity.

All of these components combined make up the meaning behind our logo and mission.

Sue’s Guide to Writing and Reading Poetry

The beauty of contemporary poetry is that it is more accessible than some of the poetry you may have studied in school. However, knowing about some of the literary devices a poet uses, will help you to understand their meaning. There may be many interpretations of a poem, depending on how it relates to the reader. I would like to offer you some basic tools to guide you through...

Our founder Maggie Keswick Jencks used her own experience of having cancer to create a new type of cancer care. The first Maggie's opened in Edinburgh in 1996, and we now have a network of centres across the UK and some abroad.

We’re here for anyone with cancer and their family and friends, whatever kind of cancer, and whatever stage they’re at.

All our support is free, and no appointment or referral is needed.

There’s also no time limit on our support, we’re here for as long as we're needed.

The Eve Appeal is the leading UK national charity funding research and raising awareness into the five gynaecological cancers – womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal.

We were set up to prevent gynaecological cancers and save lives by funding ground-breaking research focused on developing effective methods of risk prediction, earlier detection and developing screening for all of the five gynae cancers. We have played a crucial role in providing seed funding, core infrastructure funding and project funding in addition to campaigning to raise awareness.
